Tipo Desio #45

Tipo Desio #45

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan - deposito/zajezdnia/depot Desio. More original equipment at Desio depot. Trailer cars 250 and 190 date from the mid-1920s and were designed to be hauled by the Tipo Desio motor trams, like 45 shown here. This is the last Tipo Desio painted green - the traditional Milano tram livery which is now being re-introduced on Peter Witt cars in the city in place of the present orange.

Tipo Blocatto #543

Tipo Blocatto #543

12 august 1998 - Milano, Italy - Affiori. The Limbiate and Desio interurbans, known as the Brianza lines, are two survivors of a once extensive system around Milano, some electric and some worked by steam. The lines are now operated by the city tramways and have been steadily cut back until they no longer run into the centre of the city, but terminate in the outer suburbs. The service also runs only at peak times and the lines are unlikely to last much longer. Trains of three or more of these 1950s ‘blocatti’ high-floor motors and trailers are normal.

Tipo Blocatto #544

Tipo Blocatto #544

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan – Affori. The city terminus of the Limbiate interurban is in this obscure suburban side street. The line used to continue behind the tram for several km onto the city tramways to an impressive, multi-track terminus at Via Valtellina in the central area, very similar in style to Bytom Sikorskiego. All this was lost in 1999 and the tram now finishes here in the middle of nowhere.

Tipo Blocatto #547

Tipo Blocatto #547

10 august 2009 - Milano / Bresso, Via Vittorio Veneto. It seems to me, that once upon the time Milano had extensive suburban tramway network - now only had two lines survived (I'm not counting line to Rozzano, though), being operated by those ugly trams. Nowadays the situation happens to be bad - trams operate only from Monday till Saturday and don't seem to be popular amid citizens.

Tipo Blocatto #548

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan – Niguarda. Inside a bloccato set, showing the very sophisticated connection between cars - to move from one car to another, you must use the little footplate to hop over the gap! This is hardly necessary, though, as each set has a crew of four – a driver and THREE conductors, one for each tram. Little wonder that ATM Milano has been trying to close these two remaining interurban lines for years.

12 august 2009 - Milano / Cormano, Via dei Giovi. Bidirectional tramways - practical for tram operators, good for tram enthusiast.

Tipo Blocatto #551

Tipo Blocatto #551

12 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan - Affori. An interurban train at the terminus of the Limbiate line. Because the two remaining interurbans no longer meet in the city, each has its own separate depot. Trams from this line needing heavy repairs therefore have to be taken to the city workshops by road.

Tipo Blocatto #831

Tipo Blocatto #831

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan – deposito/zajezdnia/depot Desio. A train for Milano stands at the terminus outside the depot gates. The line used to continue further behind the tram, and also made connection with the Limbiate line in the inner suburbs, running to the common interurban terminus at Via Valtellina. Now the two lines are isolated and largely forgotten – maps and timetables seem non-existent and the tracks are poor.

Tipo Blocatto #832

Tipo Blocatto #832

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan –Desio, Corso Italia. An interurban train for Milano waits for passengers outside the depot entrance, where the line terminates. Note the very high floors and retracting steps. The centre tram of these blocatti is the motor car, sandwiched between two control trailers which have pantographs but no motors. Only two interurban lines now remain of what was once a large network of steam and electric routes circling the city.

Tipo Blocatto #841

Tipo Blocatto #841

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan - deposito/zajezdnia/depot Desio. Two blocatti stand in the depot – these are both three-car trains and are semi-permanently coupled. There are minor differences between the 800 series (on the right) and 500 series (left), but these are extremely hard to spot and they look identical. However, some of the 800 series motor cars were originally dual voltage 600/1200 volt machines.

Tipo Reggio Emilia #87

Tipo Reggio Emilia #87

11 august 1999 - Milano/Mediolan/Milan – deposito/zajezdnia/depot Desio. In the long grass of the depot yard stands one of the few surviving Reggio Emilia interurban cars of 1928. It was the last one of these trams to retain the old green colour scheme. As far as I know it still exists, although it must be in a very bad state by now. These trams were very similar in appearance to the Tipo Desio cars.
