Calcutta Tramways Company/

Burn & Co. SLC #207

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Shyambazaar. Most termini in Calcutta either have a tram depot or a few sidings. The newly modernised car (from Belgatchia depot) stands next to a slightly older vehicle, nicknamed the "Elephant Car". The mesh at the front is used for protection against the sometimes violent demonstrations. And besides - if I had to stand in front of a window for 8 hours at a stretch I wouldn`t survive long...

2 august 2011 - Calcutta, Dufferin Road. And this is what the newest modernised vehicle looks like - built partially from plexiglass and with slightly more modern seats. Under the floor though it`s a vehicle built at best around 1983, using pre-war technology. Not to mention the plexi windows make you feel like you`re in a greenhouse inside. Nothing like a well-done modernisation, eh?

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, Esplanade. A car on route 12/1 from Rajabazaar depot turns round under the watchful eye of the dispatcher (sorry about the person in the shot). Given the average speed of trams in this city, this one will reach Belgatchia in around one and a half hours. If I got into the metro at the nearby station I would be there in 20 minutes - if it wasn`t for the huge queues at the ticket window, which often spill out onto the street - which means it would have taken me another good half hour to buy the ticket...

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Bidhan Sarani. Tram vehicles in Calcutta - unlike any other in the world - have 1st and 2nd class compartments. The 1st class (front half of the vehicle) has seats facing the direction of travel and ceiling-mounted fans (which never work anyway). The 2nd class compartment has seats facing the centre of the vehicle and no fans. Of course the ticket prices for 1st class are a bit higher. And I`m afraid that`s it from Calcutta this time around - I have written an article for the December issue of "Świat Kolei".

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Bidhan Sarani. And here is the last pic from Calcutta. This one seems to be in a reasonable condition, with a slightly peeling ad. After taking this picture I got into a taxi and went to the airport to go back to Delhi. And from there - onward through India...

2 august 2011 - Calcutta, Park Circus depot. Sadly, since my last visit there 10 years ago, large sections of the network have been closed. In 2001 there were at least two routes serving Park Circus - now the depot houses buses and these old bangers, which won`t ride anywhere anymore. Sadly - despite the tracks not being all that bad, these trams run at around 10-15 km/h, thereby becoming true road-hogs. Also, the city tries to cope with the traffic by making one-way street systems - closing the tram tracks going the "wrong way" each time.

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, Esplanade. With this picture I`d like to start a short series of pictures of public transport from Calcutta. This picture shows a standard vehicle from this dying network. It`s tough to determine its age - the last batch of new cars was bought in the middle of the 80s, and since then these cars have just undergone repairs and overhauls, using whatever parts were available in the depot :)
