Gräf & Stift DD-2FU #9935

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Tramwaymuseum, Erdberg. Upstairs, you can see the ‘lowbridge’ layout with an offside sunken walkway and four seats in each row. Getting on and off is rather difficult when the bus is full of people!

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Tramwaymuseum, Erdberg. The downstairs of the bus is fairly conventional – but there are two staircases – one to get on and the other to get off.

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Tramwaymuseum, Erdberg. This downstairs view shows the three door layout. People without tickets boarded at the rear door, where there is a large area with no seats (like a Peter Witt tram). They then paid at the conductor’s desk on the right and could sit down or go upstairs via the central staircase.

Rathgeber P3.16 #3036

4 october 2008 - Timisoara (RO) – Take Ionescu. This tram was in the old depot yard, outside the company headquarters, which is not used for operational purposes. I think it was recently withdrawn from service when I first visited in 2008. Anyway, it was nowhere to be found when I came back in 2011, so I’m guessing it was scrapped.

Rathgeber P3.16 #2039

2 october 2008 - Timisoara (RO) – Razboieni. One of the ex-München Rathgeber P3 trams which came here around the trun of the century. This one is near the end of Line 5, an interesting, mostly single track route along partly unmade roads to the north of the main railway station. I think these trams always run singly.

Wegmann GT4d #3584

2 october 2008 - Wegmann GT4 ex Bremen Timisoara (RO) – Torontal. The ex-Bremen Wegmann cars nearly always run in motor-trailer pairs here – these two are both in the standard Timisoara livery (which is unusual for Romania – they don’t normally bother with repaints). True to form, they still keep their original German fleet numbers, though.....

Hansa GT4c #3469

2 october 2008 - Timisoara (RO) – Torontal. This busy terminus in the north of the city serves several routes and links with a trolleybus line. A single Hansa car on Line 11 has just unloaded and will now run round the loop, ready to return to the city centre.

Wegmann GT4f #3534

2 october 2008 - Timisoara (RO) – Bulevardul General Dragalina. One of the many second-hand trams in the Timisoara fleet sweeps into Gara de Nord with a Line 1 service. A large batch of these Wegmann trams came here from Bremen in Germany, along with nearly one hundred similar Hansa cars from the same source. Unusually, the second tram in this set is a genuine trailer car – Timisoara has lots of these from the same source as the motor cars.

Llandudno and Colwyn Bay #8

9 august 2004 - Seaton, Devon (GB) – depot/zajezdnia Riverside. The well-equipped tram depot is near the site of the old railway station, where the tramway used to terminate before it was extended to the town’s central car park. Here we see car #6 and a glimpse of the line’s works car #02 – essential here, because most of the line runs a long way from the nearest road. The works tram dates from 1952.

Exeter #19

9 august 2004 - Colyton, Devon (GB). Tram #19 came originally from Exeter and is the only tram from this system to be preserved.

Saloon #16

9 august 2004 - Colyton, Devon (GB). Tram #16 at the far terminus of the iine. This tram is a slightly cut-down 3ft 6ins gauge trams from the Bournemouth system and was rebuilt here at Seaton. Most Seaton trams have electrical equipment taken from ‘real’ trams and modified as necessary to fit the line. They are NOT toys......

Toastrack #17

21 august 2002 - Seaton, Devon (GB). This stretch of track was added a few years ago, to enable the trams to reach a new terminus in the town’s central car park, just a few yards from the sea front. The original terminus, where the tramway depot is now, was a fair way from the town centre and did not attract as many visitors. Car #17 is based on the Manx Electric ‘toastrack’ open cars, and has removable seats so that wheelchairs can be carried.

Llandudno and Colwyn Bay #6

21 august 2002 - Seaton, Devon (GB). The miniature tramway at Seaton originated with a 60cm line at Eastbourne, Sussex in 1953 and had steadily grown in size and extent. The line moved to Seaton in 1970 and now runs on 840mm gauge, allowing the model trams to be much larger – in fact, several are based on the bodies of old, full-sized trams. Car, #6, seen here leaving the main terminus in Seaton, is now one of the smallest trams on the property, having been built as long ago as 1954 for the Eastbourne 60cm gauge system.

Carris Remodelado #544

21 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Rua de Sao Tome. Car #544 negotiates the ridiculously narrow streets of Sao Tome, where a frequent service of trams runs in both directions! This street is also open to motor traffic, which leads to some interesting ‘meets’.

Carris (Maley & Taunton) #735

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada de Santo Andre. One of the very narrow streets which form the famous Graca circle. This tram is not a ‘remodolado’, but is largely in original condition. It runs on a British Maley and Taunton truck and has Metrovick motors, although the body was built locally in the Carris workshops. It has only a trolley pole.

Carris Remodelado #550

22 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada Nova de Sao Francisco. A ‘remodolado’ car on Line 28 claws its way up the final few yards of the fearsome hill out of central Lisbon. This tram dates from 1935 but was one of a number that were extensively rebuilt (‘remodolado’) in he late 1980s. They now have Skoda motors and powerful air brakes and can run anywhere on the Lisboa system, being equipped with both trolley pole (for the narrow streets in the Alfama district) and pantograph.

Brill (Carris) #330

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Rua Sacadura Cabral. Inside #330. The cane rattan seats are typical of American-built trams of this period, but this tram has a more unusual feature – the walls slide up into the roof to create an open-sided car for use in summer time, so the interior is distinctly tunnel-shaped. These ‘convertible’ cars were once something of a Portuguese speciality and a few still remain in Lisboa and Porto.

Brill (Carris) #330

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Rua Sacadura Cabral. One of the last remaining four-axle cars in the Carris system, this 1906 Brill is a bit like me – it doesn’t get out much. We are also both a bit old and fragile, so can’t go up steep hills, so this tram is confined to just the flat coastal line between Lisboa and Cruz Quebrada.

27 may 2003 - Schoeneiche bei Berlin (DE) – betriebshof/zajezdnia. Although looking very similar to the 1950s Gotha T57 cars shown in previous pictures, #75 is actually a RAW tram of 1975 – it went to Istanbul for their tourist tramway. From the local advertisements, it looks as though Schoeniche got some use out of this one, before they passed it on to Turkey.

Schöneiche T4 #65

27 may 2003 - Schoeneiche bei Berlin (DE) – betriebshof/zajezdnia. This system never seems to scrap very much equipment, but this Eigenbau trailer was an exception – built for Halle in 1970, it succumbed to the breaker’s hammer in 2004.

Gotha T57 #78

26 march 2003 - Schoeneiche bei Berlin (DE) – betriebshof/zajezdnia. Several small Gotha cars came here from other systems when their home systems were upgraded to Tatra KT4D or other larger trams. This one came from Cottbus and was passed on to the tourist tramway in central Istanbul .

Düwag GT6 #225

26 may 2003 - Schoeneiche bei Berlin (DE) – betriebshof/zajezdnia. This 1966 Düwag GT6 came to Schoeniche from Heidelberg and ran in service here for some years, but was eventually scrapped in 2010.

Lindner 2 achs Beiwagen #20

26 may 2003 - Schoeneiche bei Berlin (DE) – betriebshof/zajezdnia. The independent, metre-gauge Schoeniche tramway near Berlin has collected a large number of trams from other systems over the years. When I visited in 2003, many of their older, smaller trams were in store and have either now been scrapped or operate on the tourist tramway in Istanbul, Turkey. This Lindner trailer of 1925 was original Schoeniche equipment, however, and remains on the property today.

21 october 2007 - Charleroi (BE) – Parc. #9974 in the TEC tunnels beneath Charleroi city centre. Behind can be seen some spare BN cars in storage, where they have been for some years. All this has now changed, however, as the line has just been extended from here to Charleroi Sud, finally realising the original plans of the 1980s for a city-centre loop.

10 june 2009 - Anderlues (BE) – Rue Paul Janson. The last section of ‘metro’ line in Anderlues features typical Vicinal street running, as shown here, along single tracks controlled by traditional SNCV light signals. These BN cars from the 1980s now run all services.

SNCV Brabant Type SE #9974

21 october 2007 - Charleroi (BE) – Gosselies, Chaussee de Bruxelles. The lovely Type S tram from the Thuin museum runs along the main road at Gosselies, not far from the TEC Jumet depot. This line, for many years just kept for depot access, is currently being completely rebuilt as a new branch of the Charleroi network, brunging trams back to this area after all the original lines closed down in the 1980s.

SNCV Cureghem Type N #10480

21 october 2007 - Anderlues (BE) – Route de Thuin. A very typical Vicinal scene, although taken in 1997. This stop near the end of the current Charleroi Metro Leger (‘light metro’) still looks almost exactly as it would have done fifty years ago, although it is now normally served only by modern, articulated BN cars. The Type N tram shown here was brought from the nearby ASVi museum for some special trips – it originated in Bruxelles, where it ran with a trolley pole.

SNCV Brabant Type SE #9974

21 october 2007 - Anderlues (BE) – remise/zajezdnia. A Vicinal Type S tram, now owned by the ASVi museum at Thuin, stands at Anderlues Depot before setting out on TEC tracks for an enthusiast tour. TEC sometimes allows ASVi to run their trams on the Charleroi network, as seen here, although the cost of transport means this cannot often happen. After the former direct connecting line from here to Thuin closed down, it was kept in a derelict state for some years so occasional vehicle transfers could take place (and there was originally a plan to retain and operate it), but it was eventually taken up, leaving just the triangle of tracks near the depot to show where trams to Thuin had once departed. ASVi now operates just the outermost few Km of this line.

Breda VLC #08

15 june 2009 - Tourcoing (FR) – Quai de Marseille. Two Breda trams pass alongside the canal, just outside Tourcoing town centre. Although the VAL Metro serves both Roubaix and Tourcoing with a line into central Lille, the tramway is still quite well used.

Breda VLC #18

14 june 2009 - Marcq-en-Barœul (FR) – Croise Laroche. A typical Mongy station. The original depot (now given up and partly demolished) is near here, but a new depot has been built some distance away. When I visited in 2009, the old depot housed several older trams once used on the line, but no longer able to run as the line voltage has changed. I believe these have now gone to the nice little AMITRAM museum nearby.

Breda VLC #23

15 june 2009 - Tourcoing (FR) – Pont Hydraulique. A Mongy tram heading for Lille. The blank areas with no windows behind the cabs are where all the electrical equipment is housed, so passengers have no view to the front and the driver sits all alone, some distance away from the rest of the tram.

Breda VLC #16

15 june 2009 - Tourcoing (FR) – Rue Chanzy. One of the two Mongy branches finishes here in Tourcoing, where there is a short stretch of single track street running. These must be the ugliest trams in the world – so ugly, in fact, that you would ask for help if you looked so ugly! Also, they are very noisy and (amazingly) 2.40m wide on the metre gauge. Even old Konstal and Tatra trams are better than this.......

The Mongy (as it is always known, after the architect who built the avenues along which it runs) is a metre-gauge tramway running out from central Lille to the nearby towns of Roubaix and Tourcoing. All services are operated by these mid-1990s Breda trams. At one time, Lille had many other tramways on two gauges, but this one route is now all that remains. This is the junction point for the two Mongy branches.

3 october 2008 - Resita (RO) - Piata Republicii. This was the normal southern terminus, where the line swung to the side of the road before sweeping back towards the city on a tight loop across the busy road. Tracks continued from here to another terminus at Stavila, some distance further along the same road, but we never managed to travel this section during our visit and assumed it was closed. Too late, we discovered that one or two trams went there, although no indication was given in the timetable and just a small cardboard destination sign was displayed on the dashboard of these trams – so we missed our chance.
